Richard E. Killiblane's new book, They Were the Rough Riders McFarland, 2022), is an outstanding addition to anyone's "Spanish-American War" library. It contains extensive personal details on the officers and enlisted men of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment "The Rough Riders." It also comments of course on "Teddy" Roosevelt.
The book touches on the other American Vth Corps units that went up San Juan Hill and Kettle Hill including the 9th INF/LT Ira C. Welborn (USMA1898 - CMH).
Killiblane is a retired combat veteran officer and now professional historian. For 9th INF folks, he contributed an article to the MANCHU website- "The Yakima Wars" which discussed the 9th INF Regt's actions in the Pacific Northwest fighting Indian tribes before the Civil War. ...

Richard E. Killbane's They Were the Rough Riders (McFarland) is an outstanding contribution to the Spanish-American War narrative. It gives exhaustive details on the "Rough Riders" of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment.. they usually get 2nd attention after their historic commander: LT COL Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. The book gives some useful notations to the 9th U.S. Infantry Regiment/MANCHUs's operations during the Battle of Santiago when they were up San Juan Hill as part of the 1st Division/5th Corps.

Killblane's contribution: The Yakima Wars 1856-1858, is OUTSTANDING! a great narration of the 9th Inf's first actions (not including the original 3 9th Infantry Regiments which were organized and disbanded). It fleshes out the chapters in MAJ Fred R Brown's official history.. well worth the time especially for MANCHUs from the Washington and Oregon areas when the Regiment was stationed at Fort Lewis.

The Arnaldo Dumindin book, Philippine-American War 1999-1902,(posted on the website) is a very valuable reference for the 9th Infantry's actions during the Philippine-American War especially the chapter on Company C's disaster at Balangiga, Samar on 28 September 1901.
